UPC Codes

Most collectors recognize the four digit style number on the back of the hang tag, but few know the significance of the other numbers.  You will find them very interesting.

What is the Check Digit?

The last number of the UPC code is the check digit.  This number is used to determine if the scanner has properly scanned the UPC code by using a mathematical calculations as shown below.  In the case of Murphy the check digit is the number 7.

Add the positional odd numbers (left to right) and multiply the sum by 3 0+8+2+0+0+3=13x3 = 39
Add the positional even numbers (left to right) 0+4+1+6+3+=14
Add the sum of the odd and even positional numbers 39+14=53 
Add the check digit number to the sum of the odd and even numbers 53+7=60
The sum must be divisible evenly by 10 to be correct.  60/6=10
