It is important to note that the stitching on a ribbon is very delicate.  It could easily be pulled loose, and it is also possible that the stitching process could be erroneously omitted during the manufacturing process.

To keep the ribbon on an Attic Treasure™ from becoming untied, Ty Inc. stitched the ribbon together at the knot.  Unlike a Beanie Baby, whose ribbon turns loosely around the neck, in most cases, the ribbon is actually stitched to the neck of the Attic. Several Attics, however, have been discovered with a stitched ribbon that does turn around the neck of the Attic.

The earliest Attic Treasures™ did not have stitched ribbons.  An examination of our database found some interesting results. 

1. Not one Attic was found with a stitched ribbon that had a Hong Kong hang tag (the earliest hang tag,) and an "All Rights Reserved" tush tag, (the earliest tush tag which includes the red and white artist tush tag.)

2.  All first generation Attics with the Korean hang tag and tush tags which read "Surface Washable," with the exception of one Henry Brown and one Squeaky, have stitched ribbons.

3.  Since the black and white Canadian tush tags were not changed during the time they were used, they are not useful in determining the age of the Attic.  Our database shows that first generation Canadian Attics have both stitched and not stitched ribbons.

The area of overlap that we discovered is with first generation Attics with Korean hang tags and "All Rights Reserved" tush tags.  Nine Attics with this combination of hang and tush tags have been identified with unstitched ribbons, and nine Attics have been identified with stitched ribbons.

Based upon our research, we have concluded that the ribbon stitching process began sometime after the hang tags were changed to Korean, and before the tush tags were changed to "Surface Washable."
